The Island of Glass
Michael Oliver journeys to Glastonbury and its famous Abbey. Amazingly rich in history and legend, St Dunstan. St Patrick, King Arthur, the Grail and Chalice Well arc only part of Glastonbury's story. According to medieval traditions. Joseph of Arimathea not only brought vessels containing the blood and sweat of Christ, but also part of the crown of thorns and the cup of the Last Supper to Glastonbury. Here on the Druidic Isle of Avalon, or ' Ynyswitryn ' - the Glass Island - he built the first primitive church of wood and wattle, the Vetusta Ecclesia - the Great Church.
