Peter Taylor and David Paterson, two clergymen from very different traditions, went on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury and back. As they journeyed between the busy secular world of the capital city and the quiet holiness of the Cathedral Church of Christ, their conversation was recorded each day leading up to Easter, they hear an extract from that pilgrimage and relate it to their understanding of Holy Week.

The Farewell Reading of Charles Dickens by Raymund Fitzsimons
with Roy Dotrice as Charles Dickens

Driven by his unhappiness, his love of theatrical excitement, and his need of an audience, Charles Dickens barnstormed across Britain and America in a series of one-night stands. His final years were spent hurrying from town to town, dragging himself to the reading desk, when he could barely walk until, worn out by his exertions, he vanished from 'these garish lights for evermore', three months before his death. Narrated by Michael Williams.

Read by Sean Arnold 1: Mrs Lisboa
Most of these stories are concerned with the experiences ashore of a 'Hostilities Only' sailor in the last war. Their narrator 'Jan Trethewey' undoubtedly has a lot in common with his creator, the renowned Cornish poet Charles Causley. He too was a sailor for the duration of the war.

That description of South Africa by a senior member of the Government set Mary Goldring thinking, after a recent visit there, about what has made white South Africans so different from the rest of us.
