Garish Lights

The Farewell Reading of Charles Dickens by Raymund Fitzsimons
with Roy Dotrice as Charles Dickens

Driven by his unhappiness, his love of theatrical excitement, and his need of an audience, Charles Dickens barnstormed across Britain and America in a series of one-night stands. His final years were spent hurrying from town to town, dragging himself to the reading desk, when he could barely walk until, worn out by his exertions, he vanished from 'these garish lights for evermore', three months before his death. Narrated by Michael Williams.
Featuring Joss Ackland as George Dolby, Andrew Sachs as Edmund Yates and David Timson as Charley Dickens
(Repeated: Sat 11.15 pm)
