Jarvis Goodland (played by veteran Hollywood actor Ray Milland), a collector of expensive rare plants, convinces his weak-willed nephew Tony to fake his own kidnapping in order to gain access to his trust fund. Desperate to support his high-priced hobby, Goodland knows that the money can only come from the fund in an emergency. When Tony turns up dead, the dishevelled Columbo begins an investigation in his usual unorthodox style. His efforts are hampered by the over-eager young high-flyer Sgt Wilson, who has been assigned to help on the case.
