Songs of Praise begins with the first of six special summer excursions to holiday resorts around the country.
Cliff Michelmore braves the uncertain climate of the north-east coast to discover some sunshine in the Yorkshire port of Whitby. He visits the local museum to learn about the town's great explorer. Captain Cook, and he meets a novice nun, Sister Catherine Mary , who carries on the tradition of religious life which dates back to St Hilda in 657. It's on the site of that ancient community that local folk and visitors have gathered to sing their songs of praise in the ruins of Whitby Abbey. We have a gospel to proclaim (Fulda);
0 God our help in ages past (St Anne); All things bright and beautiful (Royal Oak); Oh praise him; Come down oh love divine (Down Ampney); Will your anchor hold;
