The birthday of Guru Nanak Devji was observed on Wednesday and Asian Magazine celebrates this occasion with a devotional shabad. Arranged marriages are generally stable and successful but the reality is that these, too, can go wrong. Sharan-Jeet Shan, a teacher, experienced such a marriage, which persuaded her to write her autobiography In My Own Name

If you've ever wanted a computer desk, a hi-fi video centre, bunk beds or a rocking chair, these are just a few of the items which
Richard Blizzard will be making in this series of seven programmes. 3: Oak Steak Plates
There was a time when most people ate off wooden platters. In this programme Richard Blizzard shows how to carve a steak platter out of oak and how to carve and fit handles on to steak knives and forks. In the garden he makes the ideal picnic table. Director PAULA GILDER

DIY HANDY HINT
Shaping Up
Carving is most relaxing, very creative and takes up little space. To start try the Marples curved blade carving knife and get to work on a bar of soap. Soap carving is the simplest way to learn the basic cuts of 'wood whittling'.
Fascinating shapes can soon be whittled from wood scraps or an old favourite, gnarled Ivy roots.

The Coral United Kingdom Championship
The Final (Part 3) frames 15-21
In recent times STEVE DAVIS , TERRY GRIFFITHS and ALEX HIGGINS have dominated the championship, in fact no other player has appeared in the final since 1980. Griffiths has appeared in two finals, Higgins and Davis, the holder, in four. This season Griffiths and Higgins have not found their form, while DENNIS TAYLOR and CLIFF THORBURN have, with Davis , won most of the frames and the money so far.

for Advent Sunday

Sutherland in the far northwest of Scotland is a land of empty moors, peat-brown streams and forbidding mountains. A country where sheep outnumber people by ten to one. It's a harsh landscape whose biblical severity makes a strong faith essential, and where the good news of Advent and the coming of the Lord seems particularly welcome.

Ian Gall finds himself caddying for the Minister of Domoch Cathedral on the Royal Dornoch Golf Course and meeting people from every corner of the county, who come together in the cathedral to sing their Advent hymns.

Hills of the north (Little Cornard); Jesus calls us (St Andrew); Trust and obey; I waited for the Lord (Ballerma); The Lord's my shepherd (Orlington); O brother man (Londonderry Air); Approach my soul the mercy seat (Stracathro); Hark the glad sound (Bristol).

The Coral United Kingdom Championship
The Final (conclusion) frames 22-31
Ten frames to go, S38,000 at stake and a full house of 1,400 people at Preston's Guild
Hall. Those are the statistics for this evening's entertainment. STEVE DAVIS and DENNIS TAYLOR were the players the majority were expecting to be present, but whether that forecast will prove correct will have depended on how
CLIFF THORBURN , TONY KNOWLES ,
JIMMY WHITE and the one and only ALEX higgins have been cueing in recent weeks.

A Fairly Honourable Defeat The Church of England is today on the defensive in the inner cities, apparently irrelevant in a hostile world of unemployment, deprivation and riots. But the problems it is facing are not new ones. In the week the Archbishop of Canterbury's
Commission on the Church in the City publishes its findings, Everyman asks: has the Church ever been at home in Britain's industrial areas? Or has it always, as its critics maintain, dined with the rich and preached to the poor?
The film goes to one English town - Middlesbrough and examines the Church's record there over the last 150 years. It reveals a story of lethargy and energy, of indifference and concern, of occasional victories and persistent defeats.
