The Whole Truth?
A key witness at most murder trials is the scientific detective - the expert on explosives, for instance, or the pathologist who examines the body.
But how impartial is the experts' evidence? Does the present system require them to find the whole truth, or simply make a case for the prosecution or defence. One eminent QC tells Panorama: ' A criminal trial is not an objective search for the truth.'
Margaret Jay reports on the experts, and examines doubts surrounding scientific evidence for which people are now behind bars.

Opens a new season of contemporary thrillers.
Tonight starring Lauren Hutton, David Birney

For Leigh Michaels - eager to start her new job as a television director - life seems idyllic. She moves to Los Angeles and a new luxury apartment at Arkham Tower. Gradually she becomes aware that someone is spying on her from the near-by high-rise block. Her existence turns into a nightmare world of fear and suspicion.

John Carpenter, famous for Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween and The Fog, brilliantly sustains the tension throughout this made-for television movie.
