The Duke returns to his Oscar-winning role of Rooster Cogburn; here meeting his match in Katharine Hepburn as the preacher-lady who joins his ' posse' to avenge her father's death. After being relieved of his badge for becoming too trigger-happy in his pursuit of law and order, the dissolute, one-eyed Deputy Marshal, Rooster Cogburn, is offered reinstatement if he can bring back alive a band of outlaws who have hijacked a wagon-load of nitroglycerine and guns.
