The BBC1 Documentary
A personal look at being a new boy at an old university by Antony Jay
Nearly 30 years ago, ANTONY JAY ' went up' to Cambridge and for three years he lived in the historic buildings of Magdalene College reading Classics.
Last autumn he went back to his old college to re-live the experiences of his first weeks at an ancient university from the other side of the generation gap. The programme takes him back into the world of tutorials and sherry parties, of porters and bed-makers, of lectures and coffee evenings and dinners in the candlelit hall. He looked at three freshmen from the day of their arrival and by watching them feel their way through the first weeks he saw how much has changed and how much is permanent and unchangeable.
