This Portuguese aristocrat sings fado with an almost religious fervour. In her voice there is an awareness of the tragic meaning of existence and a rare genuineness of technique. Maria Teresa de Noronha comes from a family where fado and bullfighting, both of which have their roots deep in Portuguese culture, are living rather than dead arts. She is chiefly known outside Portugal to the connoisseurs, but within her own country she has a considerable popular following. She is married to the Count of Sabrosa, who is one of the leading guitarists in Portugal.
