1, ' Introducing Pierre and Prince
Andrew'
A serial reading by Eric Gillett
Tolstoy's ' War and Peace ' (written in 1863-9) is not only one of the longest novels in existence but, by general consent, one of the greatest. The action covers fifteen years, from 1805 to 1820 ; the scene is the Russia of the Napoleonic Wars. The main characters belong to three or four families of the nobility, but the multitude of subsidiary characters-ranging from the Tsar and Napoleon himself to humble peasants and simple soldiers-are also living individuals, drawn ' in the round'. Their private lives are set against the tremendous background of the French war and the book contains some of the most memorable war scenes in the whole of fiction.

Harold Stannard
In answer to many listeners' requests for simple talks about foreign affairs, a short series is to be given, of which this afternoon's is the first. Harold Stannard , an outstanding authority on foreign affairs, is going to explain the position of Poland, a country created by the peace treaties and post-war history. Poland's foreign affairs have always been an urgent question, and she now finds herself confronted with fresh problems arising out of the new balance of power in Europe.

Sir Walford Davies ,.
Master of the King's Musick
Once again Sir Walford Davies gives the opening talk to introduce the two speakers and their subjects. In the first half of the series (January 9 to February 13) Francis Toye has chosen ' The Enjoyment of Music ' as his theme, believing that it is what one likes in music rather than what one dislikes that matters. In the second half of the series (February 27 to April 3) Thalben-Ball, organist of The Temple, will talk about the organ-what it can and cannot do.
