The Boyd Neel Orchestra is probably the most famous chamber orchestra in Britain. Not only has the orchestra broadcast frequently for some years and established itself as an instrument of superfine quality, but it is equally well-known on the concert platform. No higher compliment could have been paid to it than when it was invited to play last year at the Salzburg Festival-the first occasion that a non-Austrian orchestra had ever been engaged.
The conductor, Boyd Neel , has had an interesting career. Born in London thirty-one years ago, he began his career as a medical student at Caius College, Cambridge, finally taking his medical degrees and becoming house surgeon at St. George's Hospital, where he remained for four years. His great hobby was music, and in an amateur capacity he sang in opera and played the clarinet. Finally, the call of music became too strong, and he
JACK HYLTON with his band and numerous artists presents a rousing entertainment for Boxing Day listening tonight at 8.0. resigned his post at St. George's and went to Munich and Salzburg to study his new profession. In 1933 he returned to England and formed his own orchestra, which consists for the most part of young and keen musicians.
