Shakespeare, it is sometimes claimed. created the first Principal Boy when he sent Rosaiind into the Forest of Arden.' Whatever her - or his - origin, the fact remains that the swaggering beauty in tights has staked a large claim in the theatregoer's affection. And, of course, wherever you find a Principal Boy, there, inevitably, is his equally charming opposite number, the Principal Girl. Tonight, in the second of Gale Pedrick's 'Hail, Pantomime!' series. Principal Boys and Girls, past and present, will be summoned before the Demon King and Fairy Queen to render an account of themselves.
Fay Compton is playing in Babes in the Wood at Drury Lane, and Patricia Burke in Red Riding Hood at Covent Garden. Greta Fayne and Jack Edge are both in the Drury Lane show, and Polly Ward is at Covent Garden. Clarice Mayne, who will take part in the programme, is one of the greatest Principal Boys who ever lived, an honour which she shares with Dorothy Ward, whose recorded voice will also be heard.

The scene is an apartment in Francesca's palatial mansion.
Francesca Is reading to her women from a large illuminated book. ' The History of Lancelot of the Lake'. The stave is gazing out of the window.
Presently the women retire to fetch garlands for dancing and Francesca is left alone with Smaragdi.
Later the women return with musicians. They sing and dance to a gay measure till Francesca dismisses them. Then her lover Paolo enters and they read the book together.
Listeners may remember that Acts 1 and 2 of Zandonai's opera Francesca da Rimini were relayed from La Scala, Milan, in March last year.
