This year twenty youngsters from all over the country are assembling in Burroughes and Watts Hall , each intent on deposingast year's champion. Jimmie Hamilton , who will be there to defend his title.
Last year's runner-up,
Tommy Welch , will also be there, and these two players may expect, we understand some very stiff opposition, since the candidature includes, among other young cue-wizards, the Welsh and Midlands boy champions.
Birmingham has sent a strong contingent, including the youngest player in the championship, little eight-year-old Teddv Edge. ..

Anthony Collins has a distinctive flair for writing light concert suites and incidental music. His latest contribution to the former is the ' Three Louis XV Silhouettes '. which provides an admirable contrast to the other items in this programme, for the music is quiet in character and in the style of the eighteenth century. It is delicately scored for strings, flute, oboe, trumpet, drums, and harpsichord.
One of his most important successes in the way of incidental music was the music to the film Victoria the Great, the suite from which will be heard this evening. Another example of his gifts for this type of music will be heard later this evening, in Francis Dillon 's 'A Masque for New Year's Eve', for which Collins has composed the music.

The Argument
Fear, Discord, and their Satellitef are claiming the Old Year, 1938. He is to be identified with them for ever. The Twelve Months invoke Good-fellow, and demand that he shall stage a Trial, by which, they contend, Old Man 1938 will gain a better reputation.
The Anti-masque of Fear and Discord dissolves, and the Trial, the Masque proper, takes place. Good-fellow is the Judge. The listener is Jury and can expect to hear only frivolous and fanciful evidence, for Fantasy is Clerk of the Court.

A Watch Night Service from Broadcasting House
Tonight the microphone is going to take a tour of the British Isles to see how foil* in various parts of the country are greeting the New Year. This will not be a programme in which various people speak their greetings, but one in which listeners will be able to eavesdrop on various New Year occasions.
The bells of St. Clement Dane* will be heard in the middle of the programme when a special Watch Night service is broadcast from Broadcasting House. In this service, which will include a short address by the Rev. b. M. Berry , D.D. Secretary of the Congregational Union of England and Wales, the hymns ' 0 God of Bethel ' and ' Before Jehovah's Awful Throne will be sung.
