Schumann's two sonatas for violin and piano, both written in 1851, were the first important works for that combination after Beethoven and Schubert. They provide a striking refutation of the legend that Schumann's powers declined seriously towards the end of his career.
The D minor is perhaps the greater of the two, but the A minor -somewhat Mendelssohnian, like the Piano Concerto in the same key -is a fine work. No one but Schumann could have written the charming second movement.

Arnold Bax describes his tone poem ' Tintagel' as follows: 'This work is only in the broadest sense programme music. The composer's intention is simply to offer a tonal impression of the castle-crowned cliff of (now sadly degenerate) Tintagel, and more especially of the long distances of the Atlantic, as seen from the cliffs of Cornwall on a sunny but not windless summer day. The literary and traditional associations of the scene also enter into the scheme. The music opens, after a few introductory bars, with a theme, given out on the brass, which may be taken as representing the ruined castle, now so ancient and weather-worn as to seem an emanation of the rock upon which it is built. The subject is worked to a broad diatonic climax and is followed by a long melody for strings, which may suggest the serene and almost limitless spaces of the ocean.'

A tragedy by W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood in a shortened version for the microphone, with music composed by Benjamin Britten
Cast
Music played by Benjamin Britten and Ernest Lush
The play produced by Barbara Burnham
When it was produced a year or two ago, first at the Mercury and then at the Little Theatre, The Ascent of F6 was hailed as one of the big current successes. The collaboration of Messrs. Auden and Isherwood had produced a sensitive, symbolic, and' a deeply-moving picture of what so many men are striving for in a world of arrogance and confused values. F6, an imaginary mountain, is attacked by a climbing party led by Michael Ransom , and the play is concerned chiefly with the experiences of the party as they go higher and higher towards their goal, and finally with the revelation to Ransom in the nature of the goal itself.
