Once again some of the talks in this course will be given by a scientist, Dr. Keen, and others by a gardening expert, C. F. Lawrance. Last term Dr. Keen traced the growth of the plant from the seed, and now he is to deal with the fully-grown or mature plant. Mr. Lawrance is to describe some difficult gardening operations, and it will be for you to listen to him and try to carry out those jobs yourself.
Today, in the first talk of the new term, Dr. Keen is to tell you what happens as the plant grows to maturity, and he will discuss the meaning of maturity, the plant framework, and storage in the plant.

Cinema-goers are becoming familiar with the names of directors and look out for the films made by those whose work they have learnt to enjoy. But what exactly is the director's job? Tonight listeners are to hear just what it is from one of the most distinguished British directors.
Alfred Hitchcock made his name in the silent days with The Lodger, and has gone from success to success since the days of the talk.ies. Many listeners will have seen some of his earlier productions, among them Blackmail, Juno and the Paycock, and The Skin Game. In the last few years The Thirty-Nine Steps, Secret Agent, and Sabotage have shown the skill and maturity of his art. He has just finished a picture, probably to be called The Girl Was Young, star-ring Nova Pilbeam.

John Greenwood is chiefly known as a composer of film and theatre music. Among his most successful productions has been the music for the films Man of Artn and The Constant Nymph, and the incidental music for J. B. Fagan's stage productions of The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Some listeners will perhaps also remember that in February, 1936, Mr. Greenwood conducted the BBC Orchestra in the first performance of his short orchestral piece 'Salute to Gustav Holst'.
In the summer of 1879 Rimsky-Korsakov wrote a string quartet entirely based on Russian folk tunes, the movements being entitled respectively: 'In the Fields', 'In the Maidens' Room', 'Khorovod' (a kind of choral round dance), and 'At the Monastery'. It was tried through in private, but the composer disliked the work and laid it aside till the following year. Then, having completed the opera Snow Maiden, he took the quartet out of his desk and began to orchestrate it, turning it into a sinfonietta. The Sinfonietta was not completed till 1884, however. It consists of only the first three movements of the quartet, which were drastically revised as well as orchestrated. (The material of the fourth movement was afterwards used in Sadko.) The Sinfonietta is one of the biggest orchestral works that have ever been based entirely on folk tunes.
