Exactly 150 years ago tomorrow--on January 26, 1788-Captain Arthur Phillip , with eleven ships and a thousand men and women, sailed into Port Jackson and established the first white settlement on the site of Sydney. He became the first Governor of New South Wales. Today, in the first talk this term in this series, Dr. Walker, Professor of Economics at Sydney University, is going to tell you just what this event meant in the history of Australia, and why the celebrations there are to cover a period of three months.
All of you who listen to this talk should make a point of hearing the broadcast from Sydney tomorrow night by Lord Wakehurst, the present Governor of New South Wales.
