The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Alerton, was founded about a.d. 1115 by Gilbert the Norman, High Sheriff of Surrey, and retains conspicuous features of the ancient building. A church of earlier date is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Once a country church, it now serves a wide and populous area. It was used by Lord Nelson when he made his home at Merton Place. The bench from his pew and his hatchment are still to be seen. He went to Trafalgar from Merton, and a son of the vicar was on the Victory with him at the time of his death.

C. H. Middleton
C. H. Middleton is bringing to the microphone one of the greatest authorities in the country on potatoes. Dr. H. V. Taylor , who holds the Victoria Medal of Honour awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society, is Commissioner for Horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture. Among other public duties, he has played a prominent part in the development of the potato in ensuring supplies of healthy ' seeds ' for the potato-growing industry. He will speak about the choice of variety for early maincrop and late potatoes, and give general hints on cultivation.

The G major Quartet, Op. 161, was Schubert's last string quartet. It was composed in 1826, two years before his death. It is a remarkable and interesting work because both in technique and in feeling it foreshadows the romantic style of later composers. This is particularly true of its harmony which is closely woven in texture and very ' advanced ' for the period.
In 1906 William Yeates Hurlstone died at the age of thirty. He had already proved himself a highly gifted composer and one of the most promising of the younger British school. Hurlstone's first work was a set of ' Five Valses ' for piano, which were published when he was only nine years of age. At eighteen he won a scholarship at the Royal College of Music and studied composition under Stanford for several years. Among Hurlstone's handful of chamber music is the Phantasy for string quartet, which was awarded the first prize in the first of the Cobbett competitions.

David Everard Ford was a Congregational minister, composer, and hymn-wrifr, born in the eighteenth century. Extracts from his unpublished diary will be read by a kinsman.

An appeal of behalf of THE CENTRAL COUNCIL FOR THE SOCIETY WELFARE OF GIRLS AND
WOMEN IN LONDON, by Lord PONSONBY
The Central Council for the Welfare of Girls in London represents all public authorities and voluntary societies concerned with girls, all churches, and the Jewish community. It provides an information bureau where any girl coming to London can obtain advice about lodgings, clubs for her leisure, classes on any subject, travelling, holidays, and so forth.
Since its establishment eight years ago, the bureau has answered over 21,000 inquiries, 3,500 in the past year. The inquiries come from all parts of the country, and many of them from overseas, and reveal the urgent need that the bureau is meeting ; it combats that terror of great cities-loneliness. The work is growing and as it grows must cost more.
