Here is a trailer, so to speak, to the Oxford and Cambridge fixture to be played (and broadcast) on December 7. An Oxford man in Howard Mar shall is to comment on the form shown by Oxford against Harlequins and a Cambridge man in II. B. T. Wakelam is to do the same for Cambridge against Blackheath. Presumably, most members of the University fifteens turning out today will be in action on December 7.

This programme gives a very fair idea of Sullivan's evolution as a composer of comic opera, from Cox and Box to The Emerald Isle. Cox and Box (1867), his first essay in this direction, sprang from a chance meeting with F. C. Burnand , the well-known Victorian humorist, who wanting to help some musical friends who ran an amateur theatrical company, asked him to collaborate-without a fee.
Sullivan's next collaboration with Burnand, The Contrabandista, was a failure. He found his ideal partner in Gilbert with Thespis (1871), but the first big Gilbert-and-Sullivan success was H.M.S. Pinafore (1878). Patience (1881), Princess Ida (1884). The Mikado (1885), and The Yeomen of the Guard (1888) all date from the hey-day of the partnership.
The Emerald Isle came when that wonderful partnership was over. The librettist was Basil Hood. Sullivan died in 1900, before the music was finished, and the score was completed by Edward German.
