The ' Zigeunerlieder written in 1887, are based on the words from a book of twenty-five Hungarian folk songs with piano accompaniment published in Budapest. Brahms was so pleased with the words that he took fifteen of the melodies and reset them for solo vocal quartet with piano accompaniment, publishing eleven under the title of ' Zigeunerlieder', Op. 103, the remaining four being later included in the Six Quartets, Op. 112.

Oxford v. Cambridge
A running commentary on some of the events of the Inter-Varsity relays by Harold Abrahams from Iffley Road Track, Oxford
The Oxford v. Cambridge Relays were instituted in 1920, owing almost entirely to the enthusiasm of B. G. D. Rudd , the Olympic 400-metres winner of that year and President of the Oxford University Athletic Club. Of the 17 contests held, Cambridge have won 12, Oxford 5. At Cambridge last year (the matches are held alternately at each University) Oxford were successful by 5 events to 2.
There will be seven races, with each team represented by four men in each race. 400 yards (4 men each running 100 yards) ; 880 yards (4, 220 yards) ; 1 mile (4, 440 yards) ; 2 miles (4, 880 yards) ; 4 miles (4, 1 mile) ; 480 yards hurdles (4, 120 yards hurdles) ; and 880 yards low hurdles (4, 220 yards hurdles).
It is expected that the final two stages of the 4, 880 yards, the final stage of the 4, 1 mile, and all the other races will be described.
Relay racing is perhaps the best form of athletics, for each man is a real factor in the ultimate success of his team. A runner must not just defeat his opposite number, his job is to defeat him by as much as possible, in order to give a big lead to his side.

Gogol's collection of short stories,
' Evenings on a farm near Dikanka ', has been a fruitful source of inspiration to Russian opera composers. Mussorgsky's Fair at Sorochintsy, Tchaikovsky's Vakula the Smith, Rimsky-Korsakov's A May Night and Christmas Eve-all these works are based on Gogol's delightful, humorous-fantastic tales of village life in the Ukraine.
' A May Night ' . had been a favourite tale of Rimsky-Korsakov's from childhood ; he read it with his lady-love on the day he proposed to her ; and it was his wife who finally persuaded him to make an opera of it. The opera (written in 1878) was Korsakov's second and, as listeners will gather from the overture, is one of his most tuneful and lyrical compositions, by no means depending on orchestral colour for its effect.
