Herbaceous Borders
C H. Middleton and Thomas Hay
Thomas Hay , whom C. H. Middle ton is bringing to the microphone this afternoon to discuss herbaceous borders, is a member of the Council of the Royal Horticultural Society, Superintendent of the Central Royal Parks and Gardens, and Adviser to the Office of Works on the gardens of ancient monuments.
Many listeners will remember his broadcast talk in the short series, ' In Other Gardens while Middleton was on holiday in the summer, to say nothing of the radio discussions he has held with ' everybody's gardener ' from time to time. As one who is responsible for the glory of colour provided by the herbaceous borders in the Royal Parks, his advice on planting and renewing these indispensable assets of any summer garden will be especially welcome just now, when plants may be lifted and divided, - and the ground got ready for planting afresh.

The output of religious books is very large nowadays, and the selection of the right one as a gift to some particular person has never been more difficult-or more important at this time of the year. This afternoon the well-known literary critic and broadcaster, R. Ellis Roberts, is to make a few suggestions that may be helpful to listeners who will be buying books as Christmas presents during "the next fortnight.

During the last years of his life, the war years 1915-18, Debussy projected a series of six ' Sonatas pour divers instruments ' signed, as a patriotic gesture, ' Claude Debussy , musician francos The composers death cut short the series when only three of the sonatas had been written.
Of these three, the Sonata for cello and piano was the earliest. Debussy at one time thought of calling it ' Pierrot angry with the moon ' ; at the back of his mind, at any rate, was the idea of recalling the stock characters of the old Italian commedia dell'arte. Vallas speaks of the ' ironical, sarcastic, almost facetious character' of the Sonata and draws attention to ' the at times pathetic banter' of the 'Serenade'.

An appeal on behalf of THE MUSICIANS' BENEVOLENT FUND by Sir HUGH WALPOLE , C.B.E. '
The Musicians' Benevolent Fund is a registered charity for the assistance of sick, aged, and needy members of the musical profession. It is supported entirely by voluntary contributions and helps every class of musician in Great Britain.
Today there are thousands of musicians unemployed. The distress among them is particularly acute just now, with the winter before them. One of the principal objects of the fund is to try to relieve the hopeless outlook of musicians in their declining years, and to prevent, if possible, their ending their days in the infirmary or workhouse.
But the fund is carrying on with a debt of over £7,000, owing to the constant drain on its slender resources. It will not be forgotten that these very musicians have given hours of pleasure in the past to many of those who are listening now.

The Hart House String Quartet is the leading chamber music organisation in Canada. Attached to the Hart House Theatre, which in its turn is a branch of the University of Toronto, it is endowed to an extent that makes its members independent of any other work so that they can devote their entire energies to rehearsing and playing in public. It is interesting to note that the leader, James Levey , used to be well known in London as principal violin of the New Symphony Orchestra and leader of the London String Quartet. The cellist, Boris Hambourg , is a brother of Mark Hambourg.

' To me ', Walter de la Mare once said, ' it is utter nonsense to assume that an imaginative piece of poetry is lacking in reality. An imaginative experience is not only as real as, but far realer than an unimaginative one.' That exactly indicates the nature of de la Mare's peculiar genius, which exists in a self-created world where fantasy and reality are inextricably confused.
' Music from the Sea ' is a typical product of that genius. The realistic, almost matter-of-fact dialogue has mysterious overtones. And on the other hand the strange music from the sea that haunts the old composer in his lonely house among the sand-dunes is real, not the mere hallucination of an old and tired brain. Armstrong Gibhs is an ideal musical-collaborator for de la Mate His ' Peacock Pie ' music is well known, and listeners will remember his music for the radio version of Henry Brocken.
