The Trapp Singers are all members of one family, consisting of the leader, Captain Georg von Trapp (an ex-officer in the Austrian Navy), his wife, five daughters, and two sons. Before they turned professional, they were in the habit of singing together for their own amusement during the long winter evenings. Finally, they entered a folk-song competition at Salzburg and carried off the first prize, and they then decided to turn professional. They specialise in sixteenth and seventeenth-century unaccompanied part-songs and in German and Tyrolese folk songs.

Natan Milstein is a young Russian violinist who was born at Odessa in 1904 and studied first in his native city under Professor Atoliarski, and later in Petrograd under Leopold Auer. In 1925 Milstein left Russia. Forced to abandon his Guadagnini, he arrived in Berlin without a violin, without money, without connections. It was only a short time, however, before a guarantor appeared for a debut concert, a patron with a Stradivarius for him to play on. Milstein's first Berlin appearance definitely established him as one of the first talents of the new generation. From Germany he went to France and afterwards toured the whole of Europe and America with great success.
