In the course of an active life and much travel, Sir Ernest Bennett has had some strange experiences. The episode of the Dew Men of Crete must have been one of the most inexplicable. Sir Ernest tries his best to account for the appearance at dawn of this ghostly army marching down to the shore in Crete. But no theories based on what is known of natural laws are satisfactory. The Dew Men remain inexplicable.

She will discuss what appears to her our national acceptance of discomfort ; and who that leaves his warm sitting-room at bedtime and goes up to a freezing bedroom will fail to see her point ? She has many comparisons to make between the customs of the land she has left and the one she has adopted, and certainly it would seem, on listening to her talk, that Americans and those living in cosmopolitan cities on the Continent have much ' over us ' in the art of securing the amenities of life.

Frank Laffitte (pianoforte)
Frank Laffitte was bom at Bromley in 1901. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where he won a scholarship and the Gold Medal. In 1920 Laffitte won great success with the playing of two concertos under Sir Landon Ronald at a Queen's Hall symphony concert. During the next few years he appeared as soloist on several occasions at the Royal Albert Hall Sunday Orchestral Concerts, and since that time he has appeared in most of the leading European 'musical centres.
MacDotvell's Second Concerto
MacDowell's Second Concerto was played in public for the first time by the composer himself at Chickering Hall, New York, on March 5, 1889. It is a comparatively early work and one of the few compositions in which the American master is not concerned with any poetic idea, though the scherzo is based on material originally intended for a symphonic poem on the subject of Beatrice and Benedick'.
' Not elsewhere in his earlier work ', says Lawrence Gilman , has MacDowell marshalled the materials of his art with so confident an artistry as he exhibits in this concerto ... in fundamental logic, in cohesion, flexibility, and symmetry of organism, it is a brilliantly successful accomplishment.'
