Felix White 's ' Meditation ', to be given its first broadcast this evening, is his fourth orchestral work.
Planned first in 1911, it was revised in 1920, and was produced by Sir Dan Godfrey at Bournemouth in 1923, since when it has been unheard. The form is that of a symphonic slow movement. There are two well-defined broad cantabile subjects, both given out by the violins, the first one in the lower register, while the second—marked ' with exultation '-is more soaring in character. Most of the development section is devoted to this second subject. When both themes have been restated in amplified form, a climax is reached, and shortly after the music ends quietly.
In this second suite from ' Music to a Child's Play ', the first movement, a march, is the longest and most elaborately worked out. In ' Little
Bells' actual bells are included. In the third movement we are to suppose the ' Moths and Butterflies ' dancing in the sun, and in the fourth, ' Fountain Dance ', the sparkling water is vividly presented to us. Although in the fifth movement ' The Tame Bear ' is for the most part well-mannered, we are here and there reminded that he is, nevertheless, a bear and can still growl ; ' The Wild Bears' bring the suite to an end with great energy.

Studies in National Inspiration and Characteristic Forms
No. 3, The Nibelungenlied
Frederick Norman ,
Reader in German at King's College,
London
In this third talk in a series designed to show the various types of poetry produced by various races, with their special tastes and characteristics, Professor Norman will discuss that typically Teutonic epic, the ' Nibelungenlied '.
The ' Nibelungenlied ', one of the sources from which Wagner drew the material for Der Ring des Nibelungen, probably dates from about the twelfth century, though the manuscripts were not rediscovered till the latter half of the eighteenth century. The story it tells is apparently half-historical, half-mythical ; Etzel, King of the Huns, for instance, is obviously the Attila of history, but Siegfried is as mysterious a figure as our own King Arthur.
