The Macgibbon String Quartet:
Margot Macgibbon (violin)
Jessie Stewart (violin) Olive Davidson (viola)
Peers Coetmore (violoncello) Dittersdorf was one of Haydn's most distinguished contemporaries: he was an eminent violinist and composer of chamber music and opera, and the friend of both Gluck and Haydn. With the latter he was on very intimate terms, for, as Dittersdorf tells us in his memoirs, ' whenever we heard a new piece, we went through it carefully together, doing justice to all that was good and criticising what was bad in it'.
It is interesting to note that
Stephen Storace , the English opera composer, once gave a musical evening while on a visit to Vienna, and one of the chief items was a performance of a quartet of strings which consisted of Haydn (first violin), Dittersdorf , Mozart (viola) and Wanhal (cello).

Conducted by SIR HENRY J. WOOD
' Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man, dedicated to His Most Serene Highness the Prince of Lobkowitz by Ludwig van Beethoven (Op. 55, No. 3) '. So runs the Italian title of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, in E flat. The ' great man ' was Napoleon, to whom the work was originally dedicated, for in 1803 Napoleon was known only as an altruist and great leader: the saviour of his country and the restorer of order and prosperity. But later, when Beethoven learned that Napoleon was really a tyrant and self seeker, he tore up the cover with its dedication and substituted a fresh one to Prince Lobkowitz. Nevertheless, whatever dramatic or psychological ideas were behind the conception of this symphony, from a purely musical point of view it remains one of the masterpieces of symphonic music.

J. Foster Forbes
In this series of talks J. Foster Forbes hopes to shatter the illusion that our far-off ancestors were mere savages. For some years he has made an exhaustive study of what is known of the earliest inhabitants of the British Isles, from the New Stone Age Man of 2500 B.C. or thereabouts up to historical times, with the object of constructing a coherent account intelligible even to those who know little about archaeology or anthropology.
