' Frederick Augustus Hervey
(1730-1803), Fourth Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry '
Shane Leslie
(From Northern Ireland)
Frederick Augustus Hervey , Earl of Bristol, whose sumptuous travels are said to have been the origin of the numerous Hotels Bristol all over the Continent, was as queer a bishop as ever presided over a see. He filled his palace at Downhill with so many curates that a whole wing was set aside for them and christened ' The Curates' Corridor '. One of the curates had a toast which he regularly drank, to the great joy of the Bishop : ' A Rot amongst Rectors! '.
One evening after dinner, the Bishop-who was no bigot-obliged the Presbyterian and Church of Ireland clergy to ride races on some sands near the Palace. The next day he preached a sermon on the evils of horse-racing, illustrating his argument with references to the previous day's sport.

' The Little Mermaid' will be broadcast again tomorrow in the Regional programme at 8.0
Andersen's story ' The Little Mermaid ' is just a hundred years old this year, for it appeared (with ' The Emperor's New Clothes') in 1837. It is one of the earliest of Andersen's tales, and one of the saddest. For the story combines two favourite fairy-tale themes: the granting of a wish that turns out to have fatal consequences (the theme on which W. W. Jacobs 's ' The Monkey's Paw ' is such a brilliant variation), and the tragedy of an immortal renouncing immortality for love of a mortal.
The heroic little mermaid is really too charming, too gentle a little creature for the harsh fate her creator has given her. But there was a strain of harshness and bitterness in Andersen and it shows itself here in the torturing of a figure that he obviously loved.
