' Eighteen hundred and war-time '
H. E. Piggott
Singer, Frederick Harvey
Today Mr. Piggott will deal with some of the naval ballads inspired by the French wars of the eighteenth century. They are not, properly speaking, ' sea songs ' at all, though some of them made their way afloat. Two of the most famous were theatre songs: the words of ' Heart of Oak' "were written by Garrick for his Drury Lane pantomime Harlequin's Invasion in 1759, with music by Boyce, and ' The Saucy Arethusa ' was first sung in a musical farce, Lock and Key, at Covent Garden in 1786.

The BBC Northern
Ireland Orchestra
Leader, Philip Whiteway
Conductor, E. Godfrey Brown
Astra Desmond (contralto)
' The Music Makers ' is a setting of a poem extolling the music-makers and the dreamers of dreams as ' movers and shakers of the world '. The dream that was scorned yesterday becomes the reality of today. The music-makers, their ' souls with high music ringing ', are hailed by those who yearn for the brighter future.
It is notable that in this setting the composer has introduced a few brief quotations from some of his own major works-the symphonies, the ' Enigma ' Variations, The Dream of Gerontius, and others.
