Heinrich Marschner (1796-1861) was one of the lesser German romantic composers of opera. He followed in the footsteps of Weber, whose music strongly influenced him. Marschner had a vivid imagination and was attracted to anything savouring of the uncanny and supernatural.
Hans Heiling is considered to be
Marschner's greatest opera. It is founded upon a sombre old legend, the story of which is typical of the fantastic romanticism of the period.

Early Stages in German

The broadcast course to schopls ' Early Stages in German', which enters today its fifth year, will be conducted on somewhat novel lines. The twelve lessons of the Autumn term are designed to present a brief survey of some features of Germany and German life. The lessons will deal amongst' other things with German broadcasting, German forests, Hamburg, the Rhine, King Frederick the Great, the German steel industry, printing and books, German Christmas, German national motoring roads, and so forth. An illustrated pamphlet entitled ' Early Stages in German ' is obtainable from the BBC, price 2d. post free. The principal speaker in the course will again be A. H. Winter , Lecturer in German at the Polytechnic, Regent Street, London, and Professor of. German at the Royal Academy of Music.
