I-The Infant Church

Today's broadcast opens an important series that is to last two years. In the first year, a number of different speakers will cover the most important features in the life of the Church from the Acts of the Apostles to the sixteenth century. The second year will cover the same period but will deal in more detail with literature, art, and architecture of the Church, and with some notable personalities. From the whole series there should emerge a comprehensive view of the first fifteen centuries of Christianity.
In the case of most of us, our knowledge of Church history ends abruptly with the Acts of the Apostles and doesn't start again until the sixteenth century-and this is the gap that is to be filled in. The course is offered especially to those pupils who wish to supplement the range of scriptural reading that has been covered, and the modern religious and social problems that have been discussed, in the sixth forms of many schools.
Today Dr. Levertoff, priest-in-chief of Holy Trinity, Shoreditch, and a distinguished theologian and scholar who has written books in Russian, in Hebrew, and in German, will discuss the preparation for the founding of the Church and its birthday, the life of the infant Church, and the origin of Christian priesthood.

The talks this year will be shared between Dr. Keen, who will deal with the scientific side, and Mr. C. F. Lawrance , Horticultural Superintendent for the Northamptonshire County Council, who will deal with the general practice of gardening. The course will last until the end of June next year-that is, for three terms, the autumn term which began last week, and the spring and summer terms of 1938. This term listeners will hear seven talks about the soil, and three talks about plant growth. Today Mr. Lawrance, who is making his first appearance alone at the microphone, will speak about planning and making the garden, and will give advice on selecting the site, fencing and hedges, planning and cropping.

Few British musicians have had greater experience and possess greater knowledge of the literature of chamber music than Thomas F. Dunhill. Not only has he himself composed a number of important chamber works, but since 1919 he has directed special classes at the Royal College of Music for ensemble playing, and has written one of the best books on the subject of chamber music.
During the years 1907 to 1916 Mr. Dunhill gave a series of chamber concerts which were known as the 'Thomas Dunhill Concerts', and these provided a means of bringing to the fore many British composers who have since become famous...
Mr. Dunhill's talk this evening will be illustrated by a quartet of strings.

This musical play takes us into the kingdom of Paraphernalia which has already been visited twice before by the microphone. Gordon Crier, who wrote the book, is now with the Television department of the BBC, and Lawrence Baskcomb broadcast as the Skipper in the Melluish burlesque All at Sea. John Morley, who has written the music for this play, has also written music for a number of plays that have been broadcast from Midland.
