In 1916 the Japanese dancer, Michio Ito , produced a ballet at the London Coliseum, and Hoist wrote a number of short dance pieces specially for it. Ito furnished the composer with real Japanese themes, and all the pieces, except the third, are founded on these. The third has melodies of Holst's own invention.
The several movements are: The
Prelude: The Song of the Fisherman', a rather sad and wistful meledy, with the harp prominent in the accompaniment. 1. ' Ceremonial Dance', brilliant and in festive mood, with the drums and bells taking a considerable part in its brightness. 2. ' Dance of the Marionettes ', the movement which has no Japanese theme as the basis ; it is built upon a sort of jumpy rhythm with three quick notes to each of the two beats in the bar. Interlude, quite short and slow, makes use of the same theme as the first number, ' The Song of the Fisherman '. 3.
' Dance under the Cherry Tree'. A tune on the flute begins this delicate, graceful movement. 4. Finale: ' Dance of the Wolves'. This works up appropriately to a stirring and excited mood; attentive listeners will notice how the gong and the xylophone are cunningly used to heighten the effect.

Tonight, after a most successful season at which the standard of performance has maintained an extremely high level, the Proms come to an end, to give way to a winter season of public and studio concerts that promise to the music lover numerous good things in the form of well-known works and novelties. The chief characteristic of the programme this evening is the range and diversity of the items. There is something here for every taste - from those who like only what they know to those who take a serious interest in the latest musical developments. Of special interest will be the opportunity to hear again William Walton's fine Sinfonia Concertante, and the first concert performance of Arnold Bax's 'London Pageant' will be no less welcome.

It is interesting to note that the city of London as a subject for tone poems is popular with some of our leading composers at the present time. In addition to this new work of Arnold Bax, the BBC announces in one of its symphony concerts a performance of John Ireland's 'A London Overture', and the first performance in London of William Walton's 'In Honour of the City of London'.
