' The New African in the Making'

To the little Africans of Sophiatown, just outside Johannesburg, Miss Maud-who is the daughter of the late Bishop of Kensington-is known as ' Sister Mud '. Incidentally, one of her helpers, Miss Leeke, is invariably spoken of as ' Sister Lick '. Needless to say, neither of them minds.
During the last dozen years a devoted little band of women has built up on this spot on the gold reef a wonderful piece of social work for the urbanised natives. Their centre is called Ekutuleni, ' the place of peacemakers and Miss Maud will tell listeners about the clubs there, the playgrounds, nursery schools and so on, and how the conscience of the local authorities has been so pricked that such things as water-taps, made-up roads, and gas lamps are no longer novelties in the neighbourhood.

The combination of three strings without piano has always been more popular with composers than with executants. Consequently, the large and interesting repertory for it has been far too little exploited. The well-known Belgian critic, Ernest Closson, writes of the Trio a Cordes de Bruxelles that ' the combination is absolutely perfect alike in individual quality and as an ensemble '.

DIOCESAN MORAL WELFARE
ASSOCIATION, by the Rt. Rev. The Lord Bishop of ST. EDMUNDSBURY AND IPSWICH
This Association, the only organisation of its kind in Suffolk, gives advice and assistance to young people in difficulty or danger. It looks after the unmarried mother and her child, secures work for her, and where possible gets her a main.tenance order. To the friendless and those with bad homes, to the unstable, and those who are handicapped in various ways it gives friendship, care, and practical help.
The Association also provides speakers to address selected audiences on subjects connected with social and moral welfare work, and tries to help parents who are in perplexity about their children. It recognises no distinction of creed or inequality of sex.

Franz Lehar , probably the greatest living master of operetta, was born at Komarom, Hungary, in 1870. He studied music at the Prague Conservatoire and at first intended to embark on a career as a violinist. (He was a violin pupil of Bennewitz.) In 1888 he became a first violinist, and later principal first violin at the combined municipal theatres of Barmen and Elberfeld. In 1889 he entered the army and was soon appointed Military Musical Director at Losoncz, where he composed his first opera Der Kurassier. In 1894 Lehar was made musical director of the Austrian Navy Band.
A second opera Kukuscha (afterwards re-named Tatjana) dates from this period. But Lehar seon forsook opera for operetta. Success did not come at once; his earliest operettas — Wiener Frauen , Der Klavierstimmer, and the rest-are half forgotten. But The Merry Widow brought him fame and fortune in 1907. Since then he has charmed the world with The Count of Luxemburg (1909), Gypsy Love (1910), Paganini (1925), The Land of Smiles (1928), and Frederica (1929), to say nothing of less striking successes-works in which the Viennese spirit is presented as delightfully as in the waltzes of Johann Strauss.
