Dvorak's Piano Quintet was written in 1887. It is one of the finest of his chamber works: 'an absolute revelation ', says Ottokar Sourek , ' of the personality of Dvorak, a man apparently locked within himself, moving only in the sphere of divine beauty, now plunged in gloomy meditation, his vision lost in eternity, now smiling brightly, bubbling over with happiness and breaking forth in outbursts of the frankest joy. Such a spirit was Dvorak, and thus he appears in this Quintet-one of the freshest and most characteristic creations of his genius.'

Thomas Hay-whose son, R. Hay , gave a talk on annuals in this series on August 6-is a member of the Council of the Royal Horticultural Society, Superintendent of the Central Royal Parks and Gardens, and Adviser to the Office of Works on the gardens of ancient monuments.
Mr. Hay's great hobby is new plants, and the numerous awards he has won for them must make his rivals turn as green as their foliage. This evening, however, he is to talk about the garden as a whole, that is to say, the finished effect, taking his examples not only from parks but from some private gardens he has seen.

Overture, Prometheus
Beethoven's Overture, 'Prometheus', is the prelude to a ballet, the music of which Beethoven composed for a famous ballet master and choreographer in Vienna named Vigano.
The scenario supplied to Beethoven was an innocuous version of the classic myth, for Prometheus is here represented not as stealing fire from the heavens, but as bringing his statues to life with the aid of dancing, drama, and music.

Ida Haendel was born in Colne, Poland, in 1923. She began her musical studies at the age of three and a half, and at seven appeared for the first time in public as a violinist with extraordinary gifts. At ten she played a concerto with orchestra and soon afterwards she went on tour, playing at various musical centres in her native country, and in France and Holland.
Ida Haendel made her London debut in December, 1936, when she gave a recital at the Queen's Hall. Early this year she played both the Brahms and Beethoven Concertos under Sir Henry Wood. Listeners will have the opportunity of hearing her in the latter work this evening.
A Great Concerto
Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D, one of the greatest of all concertos written for this instrument, was composed in 1806, when it was first performed at the Theater-an-der-Wien in Vienna by the leader of the orchestra, Franz Clement.
It is a work of great lyrical beauty, particularly in the first and second movements. The writing throughout shows Beetho\en's perfect understanding of the violin and the orchestration is especially effective. One of the most notable features of the first movement is the opening figure comprising four drum beats, which plays an important part throughout the movement.
