Not many plays since CEdipus Rex have had a parricide for the hero. And Christy Mahon took his crime more lightheartedly than tragic, unconscious CEdipus-reflecting at the end of Act I, ' Well, it's great luck and company I've won me in the end of time — two fine women fighting for the likes of me-till I'm thinking this night wasn't I a foolish fellow not to kill my father in the years gone by.' But Christy was no ordinary murderer: ' I never used weapons. I've no licence, and I'm a law-fearing man..... I just riz the loy and let fall the edge of it on the ridge of his skull.' Very different from the way the Widow Quin committed her little murder: ' She hit himself with a worn pick, and the rusted poison did corrode his blood the way he never overed it, and died after. That was a sneaky kind of murder did win small glory with the boys itself.'

Unemployment Insurance and Labour Exchanges

Sir William Beveridge 's connection with the problems of unemployment began more than thirty years ago when, in 1905, he became a member of the Central (Unemployed) Body for London. A little later he was appointed Chairman of the new Employment Exchanges Committee. In 1908 he went to the Board of Trade and remained there till 1916, the greater part of the time as Director of Labour Exchanges. His later appointments and distinctions are innumerable ; from 1919 until quite recently he was Director of the London School of Economics, and since 1934 he has been Chairman of the Unemployment Insurance Statutory Committee.
But Sir William's interests are not all economic ; in 1912 he published an anthology of thoughts on woman and in 1916 he invented 'Swish', a submarine war game.

In 1778, when Mozart, at the age of twenty-two, paid his second visit to Paris, he attracted very little attention, as the Parisians were at that time far too interested in the rival opera composers, Gluck and Piccinni. In fact his Symphony No. 31 in D, especially composed for this visit and now known as the ' Paris', was his only success. It is interesting to know that in this Symphony Mozart uses clarinets for the first time.
Wilhelm Stenhammer (1871-1927) was a distinguished Swedish pianist and composer. He was also conductor of the Royal Orchestra in Stockholm and a member of the Academy of Music. Among his compositions are operas, chamber music, choral works, two piano concertos, and numerous songs.
Aux etoiles (To the Stars)....
Duparc Duparc 's ' To the Stars ' was composed in 1873, the second of about half-a-dozen orchestral works, but was not published until 1910. Scored for a small orchestra, it is described as an ' entr'acte for an unpublished drama', and bears the following quotation: 'The sidereal light of night ! Who knows what are the secret virtues of this light, so humble yet proceeding from immensity ? '
