Relayed from The Granada, Walthamstow Listeners know Albert Coates better as a conductor of world fame rather than as a composer, though occasionally an item of his appears in broadcast programmes. He has, however, composed works of major importance, particularly an opera which would have been performed in Moscow had not the war stopped it. A symphonic poem, dedicated to the memory of the great conductor Nikisch, was given at Leeds in 1925.
