A Faust Symphony
1. Faust; 2. Margarita; 3. Mephistopheles.
THE Faust legend, one of the most popular of mediaeval stories, has appealed to countless authors and composers in different ways, but the version that has done most to inspire a later era was that of Goethe. Liszt's 'Faust' Symphony, as are Wagner's Overture and Gounod's Opera is based on Goethe. The Symphony definitely has a programme, but the composer himself left no detailed explanation beyond dealing in the first movement with Faust, in the second with Gretchen, and in the third with Mephistopheles. Each of these characters is associated with a theme, and the interplay of themes is woven into the texture of the story.
