Colonel P. T. Etherton , who is to give this interesting talk on a trip by airship and aeroplane to Rio, and thence over the Andes, has led an exciting and adventurous life. Born in 1879, he served in Kitchener's Fighting Scouts during the South African War, and later was transferred to the Indian Army. In 1909-10 Colonel Etherton crossed Asia from India to England through the Pamirs, Chinese Turkestan, Mongolia, Siberia, Russia, and Germany. Furthermore, he is one of only five white men who have ever penetrated into the sacred Moslem shrine of Ordam Padshah in south-west China. During the War Colonel Etherton served in France, Egypt, the Sinai Peninsula, and Mesopotamia, and in 1918 was sent on a special commission to Central Asia. For five years he was H.B.M. Consul-General and Political Resident in Chinese Turkestan and Additiona I Assistant Judge of H.B.M Supreme Court for China.
On his return to England, Colonel
Etherton commanded the 5 1st (London) Anti-Aircraft Brigade until 1929, and in 1933 he was appointed hon. organising secretary to the Houston Mt. Everest Flight. He has written several important books on travel and frequently contributed articles to the Press on sport and travel.
