Tension is tangible as the first Major of the season, now in its 70th year, reaches its riveting climax at Augusta National in Georgia, USA, one of the most scenic golf courses in the world.
Last year Chris DiMarco was so near yet so far as Tiger Woods became one of only three players to have won at least four Masters. After Woods equalled the record of seven consecutive birdies in the third round, DiMarco could only watch as Tiger birdied the first hole of their sudden-death playoff. Earlier he'd sunk to his knees on the 18th after his chip hit the pin and bounced out at the final hole. For the unlucky DiMarco it was the second playoff heartbreak in successive Majors - he and Justin Leonard had lost out to Vijay Singh at the PGA championship.
The formidable list of past champions includes
Jack Nicklaus , Nick Faido , Seve Ballesteros ,
Tom Watson , Gary Player , Arnold Palmer and of course Woods, who last year went home with around
E750,000 and another coveted Green Jacket. Will
2006 be the year Chris DiMarco joins them?
Presented by Gary Lineker. With commentary by Peter Alliss , Ken Brown , Sam Torrance and Wayne Grady , and reports from Andrew Cotter.
