3/8. Harry Beck 's London Underground Map. The tube guide revolutionised the face of underground mapping and travel for ever. Having realised two years before that circuit diagrams were a perfect model for a new map of the network, electrical engineer Harry Beck created the blueprint that's wholly relevant today. Why did he exclude everything at street level? What dictated his choice of colour for each line? Minding the gap, Nicholas Crane checks out the facts. Pub manager James Wannerton develops a strong taste of earwax in his mouth every time he sees a regular called Derek. John, meanwhile, sees words as colours, even though he is blind. Both of these men have a condition called synaesthesia - where senses become inextricably linked - which, for years, cynical scientists have consigned to the same category as seances and spoon-bending. But now it appears we are all synaesthetic to some degree; it could explain how creativity and language evolved. This touching and witty film explores this strange world.

3/6. Born to Rule. The Norwood Park estate is the setting for what could be an unlikely break in aristocratic tradition. The current baronet, Sir John Starkey , is about to retire but, with the estate's three businesses under-performing and the house in disrepair, how can he safeguard the Nottinghamshire pile for future generations? Sir Gerry Robinson moots a contest between all of Starkey's four children - including three daughters - for the top job, thus ignoring centuries of patrician primogeniture. The results are somewhat startling. Producer Veronica Clifford : Series producers Colin Barr and Kelly Webb-Lamb
