Saudi Arabia's rich and secretive royal family is facing a growing predicament in the aftermath of 9/11, the US-led invasion of Iraq and the recent al-Qaeda bombings across the kingdom. Having fended off the assaults of modernity and democracy for 72 years, the House of Saud is now compelled to walk a perilous tightrope between the introduction of reforms to its citizens, and the continuation of the strict and puritanical religious code. What happens here matters -the holiest Islamic sites are located in this country, and more than a billion Muslims look to the kingdom for spiritual guidance. This World's Simon Reeve is given a rare opportunity to discuss this make-or-break struggle with Saudi citizens, from leading princes to reformers and women. See also The House of Saud at 11.20pm.

When Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell suddenly announced a 20 percent reduction in its available oil reserves last January, it sent shockwaves through the City.
Consequently, the share price plunged and billions were wiped off the company's value, much to the fury of investors, who had been deceived over the true state of Shell's financial health. In this Money Programme special, reporter Rajan Datar attempts to hunt down former Shell chairman Sir Philip Watts - a key figure in the deception -for an explanation to one of the biggest corporate scandals in recent times.

The House of Saud Members of the al-Saud royal family recount the history of Saudi Arabia and its connections with the USA in this Storyville documentary, originally shown in two parts.
The discovery of oil in the 1930s and the key meeting between
King Abdul Aziz and American president Franklin D Roosevelt gave the remote desert country global recognition. Despite strong links with the US, the oil boycott organised by the Saudis in response to the Israeli victory in the Yom KippurWar of 1973 had a catastrophic effect on the West. A few years later, crash modernisation proved to be a stressful process forthe devoutly religious kingdom. Most recently, the Saudi origins of Osama Bin Laden have come under intense speculation, and in the aftermath of 9/11 and the war on Iraq, are the links with the US in jeopardy? Including contributions from the former American Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
