The discovery of oil in the 1930s and the key meeting between
King Abdul Aziz and American president Franklin D Roosevelt gave the remote desert country global recognition. Despite strong links with the US, the oil boycott organised by the Saudis in response to the Israeli victory in the Yom KippurWar of 1973 had a catastrophic effect on the West. A few years later, crash modernisation proved to be a stressful process forthe devoutly religious kingdom. Most recently, the Saudi origins of Osama Bin Laden have come under intense speculation, and in the aftermath of 9/11 and the war on Iraq, are the links with the US in jeopardy?
