Thailand's Bang Kwang prison, often dubbed "the Bangkok Hilton", is arguably the most infamous jail in the world. As the Thai authorities try to crack down on drug trafficking, This World gains the first ever access to the prison in which all inmates are serving sentences of more than 30 years, usually for drugs offences. The human stories from inside include a young British man struggling to stay sane and a death row prisoner pleading for a second chance.

Documentary: The Real Bangkok Hilton: This World 9.00pm BBC2
Thailand's Bang Kwang Prison is the most notorious jail in the world, yet the reality of what goes on behind its walls has never been seen by outsiders until now. It makes for grim viewing. But it should act as a deterrent for tourists contemplating smuggling drugs through Thailand.
The Thai government hands out very harsh sentences for drugs offences, so everyone in Bang Kwang is in for more than 30 years. Despite efforts by the staff to clean the place up, the conditions are appalling and horrendous overcrowding means disease is rife. Among the various foreign prisoners we meet is Michael Connell, a child-like Mancunian who's the only British person in a cell block of 1,000 prisoners, and veteran Andrew Hawke, who points out how the shackles of the death-row prisoners are welded on permanently. Most chilling of all is the surreal tour of the execution room given by the executioner. Inside it's still splattered with the blood of those killed by a bullet although now, he explains, they use lethal injection. (Jane Rackham)
