Highlights from the Belfry in Sutton Coldfield of the opening day of the 34th Ryder Cup. A total of eight points are at stake in today's foursomes and four-ball matches.
As a consequence of last year's events in New York on 11 September, the start of this biennial tournament, in which a team of the top players from Europe take on their American counterparts, was postponed until today.
In the 1999 showdown, the US team, trailing by four points after two days of play, produced one of the most thrilling final-day comebacks in the history of the competition. This year they have the world's number one in Tiger Woods and the 2001 Open champion David Duval in their 12-strong team, while the Europeans will be heartened by the recent performances of Thomas Bjorn and Sergio Garcia.
With Steve Rider. Commentary from Peter Alliss , Ken Brown , and Alex Hay , plus reports from Julian Tutt and Phil Jones. Executive producers Paul Davies and Barbara Slater www.bbc.co.uk/golf
