Live coverage from Madrid, Spain, on day one of the final major athletics meeting of the season. National teams from Great Britain, Germany, Spain and the USA are taking part, along with squads representing Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania.
European sprint champion Dwain Chambers captains the Great Britain men's team, which qualified for this event by winning the European Cup in France in June.
Chambers aspires to rounding off his eventful season by dominating American rivals Tim Montgomery and Maurice Greene with another sub-ten-seconds 100m. Other British hopes of success lie with the experienced Jonathan Edwards in the triple jump, Steve Backley in the javelin and Colin Jackson in the 110m hurdles, along with Michael East and Chris Rawlinson , who won the Commonwealth 1500m and the 400m hurdles titles respectively.
While the Great Britain women's team failed to qualify for the World Cup, four members of the squad have been chosen to represent the European team. Lee McConnell runs the 400m, Jo Paveythe 5000m and long-jumper Jade Johnson and tri pie-jumper Ashia Hansen also compete.
