In the centenary year of Giuseppe Verdi 's death,
James Naughtie introduces from Covent Garden a live performance of Rigoletto, the ROH debut of the young Scottish director David McVicar who is working alongside long-time Verdi conductor Edward Downes. Also broadcast on Radio 3.
One of Verdi's masterpieces, Rigoletto tells the dark and powerful story of revenge, seduction and tragedy, and is filled with some of his most celebrated music, from Gilda's rapturous vision of love, Caro nome, to the chauvinistic La donna e mobile. At the centre of the story is Rigoletto himself, the hunchbacked court jester at the court of the Duke of Mantua. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
During the interval, Charles Hazlewood explores the success of Verdi's work, visiting Venice where Rigoletto was premiered in 1851, while David McVicar discusses his interpretation of Rigoletto and its relevance to society today.
