A modern interpretation of the Cinderella tale starring former
Olympic and world figure-skating champion Katarina Witt. Since the death of her mother, the beautiful Ella has lived humbly in the household of a lord. She is, however, unhappy because his daughters treat her as a servant. During an ice-skating contest that is held to help the prince chose a wife, Ella appears in disguise and the prince is captivated by her. Will he discover the identity of the mysterious skater and live happily ever after? (R) (S)

Tennis: Great Britain v Ecuador
Coverage of the first day's singles matches in this crucial Davis Cup tie from Wimbledon. Great Britain must win in order to stay in the elite group of 16 teams in world tennis - defeat would mean relegation to the zonal sections of the competition. Following the surprise early defeat of Greg Rusedski at this year's Wimbledon, British hopes will be riding on Tim Henman. Ecuador, however, have a few stars of their own, notably the Lapentti brothers, Nicolas and Giovanni. With commentary from John Barrett, David Mercer, Mark Cox and Chris Bailey.
Highlights can be seen at 11.20pm.

Steve Rider introduces a series of three films, showing on consecutive nights as a build-up to next week's Open, which reflect on the history and mystique of the world's oldest golf championship which was first staged in 1871. Carnoustie 1999. A look back to last year's Open and its dramatic finish when leader Jean Van de Velde attempted to play his ball out of the water hazard at the 18th before Scotland's Paul Lawrie delighted home supporters by overtaking him in a playoff. James Naughtie introduces live coverage of a new-style, celebratory First Night. The BBC Singers, the BBC Symphony Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by Andrew Davis, with pianist Evgeny Kissin, soprano Christine Brewer, mezzo Louise Winter, tenor David Kuebler, baritone Nicolai Putilin and organist Simon Preston.

The first half of the programme comprises Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Stokowski's orchestral arrangement of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor. The concert ends with Janacek's spectacular choral work, Glagolitic Mass. Also broadcast on Radio 3.

During the interval, Francine Stock hosts a special Proms edition of the music quiz Full House, with teams led by Simon Callow and John Sessions and guests Thomas Allen and Barbara Bonney.
