A four-part series on the state of the Roman Catholic Church.

In 1962 the church called the Second Vatican Council to address an urgent need for reform. But amidst a raft of innovations in worship, Pope Paul VI repeated the church's absolute ban on contraception, a decision that sent shockwaves throughout the church. Cardinal Hume describes the trauma the Council caused in Britain, and the programme focuses on a Birmingham parish where the new style of worship drove some out of the church altogether.
