The Chants of a Lifetime
Earlier this year, five young composers gathered in Glasgow for the Young Composers' workshop with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Martyn Brabbins.

The five participants - Fraser Maitland, Thom Petty, Nathan Rose, Karen Smith and Tom Young - were asked by workshop leader James MacMillan to write orchestral variations on an old Scottish plainchant.

This film follows the composition process and reveals the peaks and troughs experienced by the quintet, from first rehearsal to final concert.
