What are the qualities required to become a good conductor? This first Young Conductors workshop and competition gives six would-be baton-wavers under 26 the chance to find out, with the assistant conductorship of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as the prize for the winner.

The contestants will receive instruction over five days from leading conductors Yan Pascal Tortelier and Martyn Brabbins before three shortlisted candidates perform at a public concert in Manchester. The six are Stuart Stratford from
Preston, Alexander Walker from High Wycombe, Manchester's Timothy Redmond, Rumon Gamba from East Sussex, James Ross of Harrow and Huw Gareth Williams from Wrexham.
