Man-made mutant vegetables are already present in some processed foodstuffs but, as the major seed producers mix them with natural crops, it is not obvious when this is so. Michael Delahaye reports on the fears of scientists, farmers and supermarkets that people are being force-fed genetically modified food while doubts remain about long-term effects.

At the end of the sixties, the world faced a barrage of warnings that global stocks of fuels and minerals were running out and that industrial society was doomed.
These claims have failed to materialise but the puzzle remains over the conflict between the potentially serious damage to the earth from the exploitation of its resources and the desire for industrial growth. Narrated by Francine Stock.
