Juliet Stevenson and Ken Stott star in an unusual love story which has reached the screen as the winner of the first Dennis Potter Film of the Year Award. Richard Cameron's Screen Two drama explores the feelings of two people who recognise each other as kindred spirits, but whose relationship threatens the pattern of their and others' lives.
Stevenson plays against type as the repressed Jean, who moves into her mother's old house to escape her bleak home life. Ken Stott's monumental mason, Redfern, re-discovers himself through their meetings, but suspicion surrounds their friendship.
Unusual for TV, the story unfolds at its own pace, taking its significance from what is left unsaid and what does not take place. It is a drama as concerned with inner life as it is with external events.
