Having overcome the emotional turmoil that characterised his early erotic paintings, Cezanne channelled his passion into portraying nature. Working in Provence and in northern France, he arrived at his revolutionary painting style, one that would later influence such artists as Picasso and Matisse. But during the 1880s he was still an oddity, mocked by the Paris art world.
